We all know we should drink plenty of water. But how much is enough?
For generations, health professionals advocated the 8×8 rule. 8 fluid ounces of water, 8 times per day. Almost 2 liters of water for the average adult. Of course the more active you are, the more water is needed to maintain proper hydration. CamelBak has created a nice Hydration Calculator to help people estimate their water needs. This seems like a lot at first blush until you think about the fact that the human body is almost 60% water. But what is all of this water doing if? It’s not like it is just sitting around inside of you sloshing around.
Water is a main component to most bodily fluids. It’s in your sweat, urine, blood, digestive enzymes and more. Water helps your body maintain a regular temperature, transport nutrients, and it aids in the digestion of foods and absorption of nutrients.
Water, by itself is not a weight loss aide as was once thought. But, it can be used to replace a higher calorie alternative and control total calories consumed. Water does aide in the process of carrying nutrients and electrolytes to muscles which is very important to prevent muscle fatigue during exercise. Proper hydration before and during periods of exertion help maximize the results.
Your skin is a protective barrier meant to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration causes the skin to appear dry and loose its elasticity (wrinkled). Maintaining proper hydration is key to keeping your skin moisturized and minimize wrinkles.
Probably one of the most important functions of water in the body is its role in the transportation and elimination of waste from the body. The kidneys utilize water to essentially flush waste (urea) from the cells and transport the waste from the body. Proper hydration also keeps the gastrointestinal system working properly.
